Why Aquí y Allá?

OUR MISSION

Art

Creative expression opens doors to understanding.

Memory

Stories preserve history, identity, and lived experience.

A group of people, some kneeling and some standing, gathered outdoors in front of a historic building with classical architecture. They are wearing casual clothing and sunglasses, with some making hand gestures. There is a black and gold helmet on the ground, and bicycles are visible. The scene appears to be at a public event or gathering.

Belonging

Communities grow stronger when every voice has a place.

About Dr. Martina Ayala

For more than three decades, I have dedicated my life to creating spaces where culture, education, and the arts become pathways to belonging.

I was born and raised in Northeast Los Angeles, where the stories, traditions, and resilience of my community shaped who I am and inspired a lifelong commitment to preserving cultural memory. As an educator, curator, filmmaker, podcaster, and cultural organizer, I have spent my career working alongside artists, scholars, educators, and community leaders who believe that culture is not simply something we preserve—it is something we live, share, and continually create together.

My work has connected communities across the United States, Mexico, and Latin America while embracing the richness of Chicano, Latinx, Afro-Latinx, Caribbean, Indigenous, immigrant, and diasporic experiences. Whether curating exhibitions, producing documentaries, hosting conversations, mentoring emerging leaders, or developing educational initiatives, my purpose has remained constant: to amplify voices that deserve to be seen, heard, valued, and remembered.

Why I Created Aquí y Allá

Aquí y Allá was born from a simple yet profound question:

Where do we belong when our lives exist between cultures, languages, countries, and identities?

For millions of people, belonging cannot be defined by a single place. We carry multiple histories, multiple homes, and multiple identities. We are shaped by migration, memory, family, and community. We live here and there.

I created Aquí y Allá: The Right to Belong to explore those spaces between worlds and to celebrate the people who navigate them every day with courage, creativity, and resilience.

What began as a podcast has evolved into a broader cultural platform that brings together conversations, exhibitions, documentaries, educational initiatives, public programs, and collaborative projects. It is a place where artists, scholars, cultural bearers, students, and community leaders come together to reflect on identity, migration, belonging, creativity, and our shared responsibility to preserve the stories that shape us.

At its heart, Aquí y Allá believes that every story has the power to build understanding, strengthen communities, and inspire future generations.

A Vision for the Future

My vision is to build a lasting cultural platform that connects artists, educators, researchers, students, institutions, and communities across the Americas and beyond.

I believe storytelling has the power to transform how we understand one another.

I believe art creates dialogue where politics often creates division.

I believe preserving cultural memory is essential to shaping a more just, compassionate, and inclusive future.

Through podcasts, documentaries, exhibitions, educational resources, research collaborations, international cultural exchanges, and community partnerships, Aquí y Allá will continue to foster meaningful conversations that transcend borders and celebrate our shared humanity while honoring the uniqueness of every culture and lived experience.

This is more than a project.

It is a movement rooted in connection, collaboration, and the belief that everyone deserves the right to belong.

A Personal Reflection

Throughout my life, I have learned that borders may define nations, but they should never define our humanity.

Aquí y Allá is my commitment to preserving the stories that connect us across cultures, generations, and geographies. It is an invitation to listen deeply, to learn from one another, and to recognize that our differences are not barriers—they are the threads that enrich our collective story.

I believe that when we honor memory, celebrate culture, and create spaces where every voice is valued, we do more than preserve the past—we help shape a more hopeful and inclusive future.

Thank you for being part of this journey.

Bienvenidos. Welcome. Wherever you call home, you belong here.
